Mysteries of the darkroom/A new perspective

The very best photographers have captured unforgettable fashion photos through their lenses. The ones taken for our Lesson in Seduction are a great example, as are the stunning shots in our favourite glossy magazines. Find out more about some of these image magicians.

Fashion photographers are artists in their own right. They create dreams and capture emotions as well as current moods and trends, and are much more than just producers of stunning images; they showcase the world's most beautiful women. Their keen eye means they can elevate the look of an era to a style or immortalise a particular silhouette, sometimes producing shots that are unforgettable works of art.

Helmut Newton, Peter Lindbergh, Guy Bourdin, William Klein, Sarah Moon, Jeanloup Sieff, Richard Avedon, Patrick Demarchelier, Bettina Rheims, Diane Arbus, Herb Ritts and Dominique Issermann: all masters of colour or virtuosos in the field of black and white, their work now fills international museums and exhibitions.

From classic images of the 50s and 60s to contemporary photo shoots by Mert & Marcus, Inez & Vonoodh, Steven Meisel or Sonia Sieff, their signature photos are the hallmark of an era just like a brand identity, part of its DNA. See, for example, the iconic photo of the Yves Saint-Laurent safari jacket from the 70s, the Dior Bar suit from the late 40s, Guy Bourdin's somewhat provocative images of Charles Jourdan shoes, or the Chanel campaigns shot by Karl Lagerfeld himself.

Speaking of campaigns, Aubade has gone for unprecedented bold styling. Freedom of expression, uniqueness, beauty and elegance are the key messages. The artistic photography feel of the Lessons in Seduction, launched in 1992, has become part of fashion culture, supported by 8 talented photographers including Ali Mahdavi and Michel Perez.

This season, Aubade has called on Marcus Jans to produce the fashion images for the Spring-Summer 2022 collection. Hailing from Germany, this specialist fashion and portrait photographer's work regularly illustrates the pages of fashion and lifestyle magazines, and he has also worked alongside the famous American photographer Nan Goldin. His unique perspective is inspired by his days as a philosophy student, playing on the complexity of our connections to our everyday surroundings.

This approach and eye for composition are what appealed to Aubade, and hopefully to you too.
